Keep Calm & Lemon Balm

Keep Calm & Lemon Balm

To build off of last week’s herb of the week, chamomile, we are focusing on lemon balm, an herb that has similar calming effects. If you are looking for something healthy to help you unwind at the end of a long day, lemon balm is the way to go. It’s been known to help people suffering from depression and anxiety, but it also helps you think a little quicker on your feet.

“Lemon balm strengthens your brain while lifting your mood,” explains Dr. Kristal. “It is great for reducing anxiety and nervousness while boosting cognitive function.”

So there you have it - an ideal tea to help you stay calm and focused. Whether you have a big exam coming up or you are simply trying to cope with the stress of life during a pandemic, lemon balm can be a big help.

Try it in our Lemon balm/mint/lavender tea blend  and see for yourself!

Keep Yourself in Mint Condition

Keep Yourself in Mint Condition

Last week we explored the benefits of pineapple mint with Dr. Kristal Richardson, and this week will be an expansion on that with the healing properties of mint (an herb in so, so many of our products).

There are many benefits to drinking a cup of tea with mint, including it as an ingredient in your meal, or using the pure essential oils from it topically. It can help with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), relieve indigestion when combined with caraway, and even improve your memory!

Here’s another thing to keep in mind as we enter the cold weather season in the coming months: it helps you clear your sinuses.

“Mint tea is a great way to clear up your sinus…yes, the sinuses,” says Dr. Kristal Richardson. “Research has demonstrated that menthol, the active ingredient in mint, improves airflow in the nasal cavity. So, the next time you have sinus congestion and you need to breathe, drink a cup of mint tea.”

Let one tablespoon of mint simmer in hot water for five to ten minutes, then enjoy its many benefits. Stay tuned for next week’s exploration of the various herbal remedies available at Fangboner Farms!

Pineapple Mint: Complex Flavors, Powerful Medicine

Pineapple Mint: Complex Flavors, Powerful Medicine

This week in our herb series we are focused on the medicinal properties of pineapple mint, which you can find in one of the tea blends we offer at Fangboner Farms (pineapple mint/mint/orange). This refreshing, tropical blend is so much more than a tasty brew; it is full of health benefits.

Pineapple mint is carminative, meaning that it packs a serious punch when it comes to, er, moving things along.

“A cup of pineapple tea works great in soothing the walls in your gut. It can help relieve cramps and removes gas from the digestive tract,” says Dr. Kristal Richardson, a certified naturopathic doctor.

She says this herb is also considered both antiseptic (it inhibits and kills the growth of microorganisms) and febrifuge, meaning it can help reduce fever

“It works great for controlling a fever and for fighting nasty infections,” Dr. Kristal adds.
